AIM Lucky Number
How AIM works.
ATA is the Amateur Trapshooting Association that encompasses all 50 states having shoots and state shoots, Satellite Grands, and the Grand American. Many states have local gun clubs that throw “registered” targets that are either part of the Big 50 program (you shoot 50 16 yard targets, 50 handicaps, and 50 doubles) and regular programs which are generally 100 16s targets, 100 handicap and 50 pairs of doubles. At a state shoot or special events you can shoot as many as 200 16s targets in a day for the “championship” event.
Handicap works differently than high school meets. In the ATA, based on your age you start at different yardages. Under 15 years old you would start at the 19 yard line and all females would start there. Over 15 years old you would start at the 20 yard line. You “earn” yardage by breaking a winning score or anything over 96/100. A 96/100 gets you a guaranteed half yard and a 97 is one full yard. (If you shoot from the 23.5 yard line you just still continue to stand behind the 23 yard line marker)
Doubles is an extremely fast and fun game that is not required to participate in. Handicap is also not required; you can always pick and choose what event you would like to do at any tournament. In order to claim a prize in the HOA (high over all) or HAA (high all around) participation in all events is required and those are just extra awards at the end of the shoot that shows who was most consistent over a week or weekend.
With the State AIM program we will be hosting the event on Friday June 26th with the doubles event taking place. Saturday June 27th will be the 16s or “Singles” event. This event has 5 person team awards available as well as individual. Finally on Sunday June 28th we will have the Handicap event. All awards in the AIM are concurrent with ATA awards, meaning an individual could potentially win 2 trophies in one event. The AIM operations handbook on the AIM website will go into details over how many medals are awarded and explain various MSE events and the AIM Online Handicap event.
I will have awards for all four categories (Pre-Sub, Sub-Junior, Junior and Junior Gold). Pre-Sub shooters are anyone under 12 years old, Sub-Junior is anyone under 15 years old, Junior is 15-18 years old, and Junior Gold is 18-23 years old and that birthday is as of September 1 of the previous year. So an example would be someone turning 15 on August 31, 2025 would currently be a Junior shooter in this target year while someone born on September 2nd, 2025 would be a Sub-Junior since they were 14 on September 1st.
Every year at the state shoot we have a lucky number draw for the 16s/Singles event. The number will be picked and if your score ends in that number you are eligible to shoot off for a Negrini Gun Case and this year there will be the choice between the gun case and a Lifetime NTA Membership ($150 value). Attached is a flyer to help promote the lucky number shoot off.
Websites that would be helpful for new shooters to the ATA would include: shootata.com aim4ata.com and shootnta.com
